How to Turn Off Audio Playback While Recording in Premiere Pro

Recording voiceovers or narration directly in Adobe Premiere Pro can sometimes be tricky if your timeline audio keeps playing while you record. This can cause distraction, feedback, or even make it hard to focus on your voiceover. Fortunately, Premiere Pro has a simple way to mute the playback audio while recording. Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Open the Audio Track Mixer

  1. Go to the Window menu in the top toolbar.
  2. Select Audio Track Mixer ? choose the sequence you want to work with.

The Audio Track Mixer allows you to control volume, panning, and other settings for each track in your sequence.

Step 2: Arm the Track for Recording

  1. In the Audio Track Mixer, find the track you want to record on.
  2. Click the R button (Record Arm) to prepare the track for recording.

Note: Only the track that is armed will record your voice or instrument input.

Step 3: Mute Playback on Other Tracks

  1. In the same Audio Track Mixer, locate the tracks that already contain audio.
  2. Click the M button (Mute) for each of these tracks.

This ensures that while you’re recording, you won’t hear the existing audio, which can prevent feedback or distraction.

Step 4: Record Your Audio

  1. Press the Record button in the Audio Track Mixer.
  2. Start recording your voiceover or instrument.
  3. Only the armed track will record, and all muted tracks will stay silent during recording.

Optional Tip: Monitor Audio Separately

If you want to hear yourself while recording but not the timeline audio:

  • Enable the Monitor Input button (looks like a speaker icon) on your armed track.
  • Keep other tracks muted so your playback audio doesn’t interfere.

Why This Helps

Turning off audio playback while recording helps you:

  • Avoid distractions from background audio.
  • Prevent audio feedback or echo.
  • Focus solely on recording clear and clean audio.

Recording directly in Premiere Pro doesn’t have to be stressful. By muting other tracks and arming your recording track, you get a smooth workflow and professional results for your voiceovers.
